Poverty: An Evil Of Pakistan By Rahib Ali Rind

POVERTY is intolerable for any country in the world. As far as Pakistan is concerned, there is rapid increase in poverty.

Poverty is a condition in which community lacks the financial resources and essentials for a minimum standards of living such as clean water, nutrition ,clothing ,health care education and shelter, because of instability to afford them. The government is paying improper attention to this unbridled growth of poverty.

As per the latest poverty estimates in 2019, 24% of Pakistan’s population lives below the national poverty line; which includes 31% in rural areas and 13% in urban areas. Furthermore, 38.8% of the national population is poor based on the multidimensional poverty index (MPI)2 ; 54.6% in rural areas and 9.4% in urban areas.

It is an alarming stage for the country.

Moreover, there are many causes which adversely affect over rising monster of poverty.

Bad governance, low Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), lack of local businesses, widespread illiteracy, population explosion, agricultural backwardness, low level of modern technology, improper use of national natural resources, water scarcity and nergy crisis are the major culprits in this regard.

Similarly, high imports and less exports further fuel the burnt of this issue. As per reports, Pakistan is the 24th largest in the world in terms of purchasing power parity (PPP), and 42nd largest in terms of nominal gross domestic product.

Pakistan has a population of over 212.2 million (the world’s 5th-largest), giving it a nominal GDP per capita of $1,357 in 2019, which ranks 154th in the world and giving it a PPP GDP per capita of 5,839 in 2019, which ranks 132nd in the world for 2019.

Furthermore, rampant corruption, devalued currency, budget deficit, low Gross domestic product (GDP) growth major consequences which severely jolt the abject poverty.The state is unable to provide such a huge chunk of poverty.

According to the Marcus Aurclius,” Poverty is the mother of crime.” The poor one faces financial crunch can easily be fall a prey to terrorist ideology.

Similarly, in absolute terms, people living in poverty will increase from 69 million in June 2018 to 87 million by June 2020, indicating 26% increase in poverty or an addition of 18 million people in the first two years of the PTI government.

The previous governments have tried their level best to mitigate Poverty but failed due to certain reasons.

In the same way, the present government has taken an effective steps to curtail poverty by; eradicating corruption at national level ; providing quality education to invest in educational institutions; promoting tourism through China Pakistan economic corridor (CPEC) project between China and Pakistan, and kartarpur corridor; generating local business ; creating a lot of opportunities; introducing infrastructure of modern technology; enhancing good relation with foreign countries; increasing exports; abating imports; proper use of natural resources and balancing trade system.

By and large, it can be said that poverty is the burning question of the day. It has reached an alarming stage in the land of Quaid.

Approximately one third of population is below poverty line. Poverty keeps Pakistan away to become a self relient country. Great nations have progressed by leaps and bounds after solving their issue of poverty.

In the same pattern, the government should take above remedial measures to mitigate poverty then Pakistan will touch the highest peak of prosperity.
